[Note:- Article Bridport Beaminster & Lyme Regis Telegram Thursday 15th June 1865 -- DANGEROUS FREAK TO FRIGHTEN WIFE
Last week a coach builder, named Henry HILLIER, in the employ of Mr. Hutchings in this town, nearly lost his life in the foolish endeavour to frighten his wife. On Wednesday night, shortly after eleven o'clock two girls were going out of Salisbury Field into the short land leading to Fordington, when they saw a man who proved to be Hellier, suspended by the neck, the iron bar at the top of the gate. They were alarmed and ran to get assistance, In the meantime, a South Western railway porter named Blanchard and a lodger of his named Charles Young going out of Fordington towards the White Hart Hotel to fetch some beer found the man hanging as before stated. He was in a sitting posture with his feet resting upon the ground but the whole weight of his body hung upon his neck, which was fastened to the gate by a neckerchief. Young seeing the position of the man called out to him " What are you doing?" but receiving no reply with w promptness deserving of the heartiest commendation, took a knife from his pocket and cut him down. Hillier fell to the ground apparently lifeless. Young told Blanchard to run for a doctor, but the latter was frightened and returned to his house to fetch another lodger, While he was gone, Young being unable to perceive that Hillier was breathing, or to feel any pulsation from the heart, took off the neckerchief, and set about shaking him with a view to restore animation. That not producing the desired result he struck the man a smart blow in the back, and was pleased to get from him in response a loud "Ugh". At this moment Blanchard returned with a man named Gibbs. Soon after the man revived so much as to be able to walk. Young told him he should give him into custody for making a fool of himself. Hillier begged to be freed, but Young and his companions persisted in giving him up to the police. On the way Hiller said he did not intend to make away with himself; his wife and he had had some words; and he wanted to frighten her; he thought she would have followed him. When near the White Hart Hotel some of Hiller's friends tried to get him away; but just then P.C.COUSINS who had heard of the occurrence came up and received him into custody, and charged him with attempting to commit suicide. On searching Hillier the constable found one piece of a neckerchief in his pocket. When he took it out prisoner said "That's the piece I did it with; I didn't intend to hang myself; I only intended to frighten my wife." Afterwards P.C.COUSINS went to the gate where the affair had taken place and took off it the other part of the neckerchief. On Thursday morning the prisoner was brought up before the Mayor (Dr. Aldridge) and J Bishop Esq (ex Mayor) charged with attempting to commit suicide. The above facts were detailed in evidence. The prisoner said he knew that was said by those who came about him, and in order to show that, he cross-examined the principal witnesses as to a boy coming up and saying "Oh Mr Hillier." I appeared however that this was just after Blanchard returned with Gibbs, when Young by his vigorous efforts had partially restored the man. The Mayor remarked that this was a most serious charge. Whether or not he had intended to destroy himself it was quite certain that had not Mr Young happened to have come up as he did he (prisoner) would quickly have been dead. He had no sympathy with a man that would attempt to destroy himself . He believed that a man who would do that was capable of committing murder. However, prisoner would be remanded till Monday and in the meantime further inquiries would be made respecting the matter, which he hoped would exonerate him from the grave offence with which he stood charged.

On Monday before the Mayor and J Bishop Esq he was brought up on remand and was ordered to find two sureties in £10 each and give bail himself in £20 to keep the peace for a month. Young who cut Hillier down and thus preserved his life then applied for costs -- The Bench said they had no power to allow him costs - Young replied that he thought that very hard, as he was under bail to appear that day and had been staying in the town ever since while he wanted to be in London. He hoped he should never have another such job. It was quite £3 out of pocket and the fellow's life that he had saved , he did not believe, was worth half the money.
