UK National Archives. E179/330/2 Exchequer. King's Remembrancer.
Contribution and loan to relieve Ireland granted by Parliament. 8 February 1642 (date of warrant),
28 May 1642 (date of return).
On 8 February 1642 an Act was passed in the Long Parliament for a 'speedie contribution and loan towards the releife ' of the king's 'distressed subjects' in Ireland. The UK National Archives says that murders and massacres of Protestants in the Irish kingdom were denounced in the strongest terms. Collections to help these unfortunate people were to be made by 1 June 1642 in all the parishes of England and Wales by the churchwardens and overseers of the poor, probably after exhortative sermons were preached in the parish churches. The names of all contributors and amounts given were to be recorded. The records, and the money collected, were to be handed over to the high constables of the hundreds, who were to deliver them to the sheriffs. It was then the responsibility of the sheriffs to bring the notes and money to London by 1 July 1642 so that the funds could bedistributed to the victims by members of Parliament.

The UK National Archives describes this piece as an assessment of individuals for Fordington parish, Dorset. Since the monies were collected by the minister, churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the parish and since some very small amounts appear, the UKNA concludes that the document relates to the contribution and loan to relieve Ireland granted to Charles I in 1642.

The document comprises four folios stitched into a cardboard folder. The folios have been numbered 1,2 and 4 in pencil (there is no folio numbered 3, it is presumably the (blank) reverse of folio 2). The bottom left corner of folio 2 is torn and the top of folio 4 is badly stained but otherwise the document is in good condition. The original document lists contributors in two columns on folios 1 and 4, here presented in a single column. Surnames have been capitalised but otherwise are transcribed as written.

    Contributions from 157 people, including 34 women, totalled £15 3s 8d. A further £2 was collected from un-named contributors.
